Primary Care Practitioners Focus on Reducing the Risks that Lead to Heart Disease at Cardiometabolic Risk Summit, September 2012 in Las Vegas

Millstone, NJ (PRWEB) December 19, 2011

Primary care practitioners from across the country will convene September 7?9, 2012, in Las Vegas, NV for the Primary Care Cardiometabolic Risk Summit. The Cardiometabolic Risk Summit, presented by Consultant in partnership with North American Center for Continuing Medical Education, LLC (NACCME) and HMP Communications, is the only national, multi-day conference specifically designed to help healthcare providers in the primary care setting reduce cardiometabolic risk.

The statistics are alarming:

One in 3 adults in the United States are affected by the epidemic of cardiometabolic syndrome ? a constellation of risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.1

Primary care providers are at the forefront of treating cardiometabolic risk, with hypertension representing the most commonly diagnosed condition at physician office visits and more than 90% of patients with diabetes cared for solely by their primary care provider. 2

Approximately 1 in 3 adults have been diagnosed with hypertension, accounting for 46.3 million ambulatory visits each year. 3

Diabetes affects nearly 8.3% of the US population ? an estimated 25.8 million individuals ? and an additional 79 million people are considered to have pre- diabetes. 3

33.8% of the individuals in the United States are obese and 34% are overweight, which puts them at risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. 3

16.3% of adults in the United States have high cholesterol, and individuals with high total cholesterol have approximately 2 times the risk of heart disease as people with optimal levels. 3

With the Cardiometabolic Risk Summit, primary care physicians, internists, general practitioners, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified diabetes educators, and other related healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients at risk for cardiometabolic syndrome will gain the knowledge and skills to combat this growing epidemic.

North American Center for Continuing Medical Education, LLC (http://www.naccme.com), and HMP Communications Holdings Company, provides the highest quality CME/CE across medical disciplines and therapeutic areas. In conjunction with top medical faculty, NACCME develops evidence?based initiatives that target specific educational needs, assisting healthcare professionals in improving patient outcomes by bridging the gap between current and best healthcare practices.
